Sources of Pollution and Their Effect - 1081 Words

Air pollution used to be a natural occurrence that had no major effects on the Earths inhabitants. Such instances were caused by forest fires, emission from the Earth, and volcanoes. It was not until humans discovered how to start and control fire that we started over polluting the planet. For many years cities have struggled through thick smog due to dense smoke emissions. Officials, like in Los Angeles, have tried to adopt multiple measures to combat the smog but the city, and the rest of the world, continued to boom in industry. Thus, overwhelming the air pollution reforms the city tried to enforce. However, it was not until about seventy-one years ago during the height of World War Two, when the dire consequences of air pollution began to dramatically increase. Instead of a foreign enemy attacking the city of Los Angeles, it was a domestic one, smog. On July 26, 1943 downtown Los Angeles was covered in smoke and fumes. The smog was extreme to the extent that it cut off visibility of three blocks. This spontaneous â€Å"gas attack† came about in the middle of a heat wave. For the citizens it was unbearable. They suffered from throat-scraping and eye stinging sensations. The people soon realized that something must have gone wrong.. The day after the incident, the city officials blamed the Southern California Gas Co.s Aliso Street plant for the catastrophe. In order to stop the smog, the angry public had the plant shut down temporarily. African Americans And The Criminal Justice System

Due to the history of the United States, there are inherent biases within a myriad of institutions. One of these institutions which have policies which negatively affect minorities is the criminal justice system. There is an overrepresentation of African Americans and Latinos within prisons. Discrimination and prejudice have morphed throughout time to continue to keep individual without power. There are more African American adults in prison or jail, on probation or parole—than were enslaved in 1850 (Alexander. New Jim Crow.) Through the history of this country, this trend has developed to continue the disfranchisement of minorities. The United States prison population has quintupled in the last 30 years; now having the highest rate of incarceration in the whole world. This is mainly due to the unproportionate incarceration of minorities. Throughout the era of slavery only White, primarily wealth, males could vote. They were the ones who had the power. IT Risk Management Of Aztek Samples †MyAssignmenthelp.com

Question: Discuss about the IT Risk Management Of Aztek. Answer: Introduction Aztek is an organization that is based out of Australia and it is a financial firm that provides its clients with the services in the financial sector only. There are various business sectors that are present and have been set up in different countries that contribute in the economy of a particular country. Some of these sectors have a lesser contribution and there are some sectors and units that are mandatory and without the strong hold of such sectors, a successful economy will not be developed. One of such examples is the financial sector. There comes a great responsibility as well to the organizations under this sector to give their best so that the customer demands are fulfilled. Aztek has been successfully contributing towards the goal of developing strong economy for Australia and has served its customers excellently. The organization is now expanding which is causing certain issues in terms of the customer satisfaction levels. Owing to the current state of problems and issues, the senior officials at Aztek have come up with different project proposals. Some of these ideas include the permission to the employees of Aztek to bring their personal devices at work, use of external cloud hosting solutions for information management, outsourcing of some of the key IT functionalities and likewise. After analyzing the current and future needs of the organization, the management has decided to include and implement the first suggestion of allowing the employees to bring and use their personal devices at work. The details of the project and the risk areas associated with it have been covered in the report along with the risk management process. BYOD: Project Overview Bring Your Own Devices (BYOD) is a scheme that promotes the use of employee-owned devices in a business environment. IT consumerization is one of the growing trends in the present day business conditions and BYOD is a stepping stone towards achieving the same. Under this scheme, employee-owned devices like Smartphones, networking gadgets, tablets, laptops etc. are sanctioned and allowed by the business units to be used in the organization or as part of the parallel systems. This has been decided to be implemented in Aztek as well so that the load of procuring additional tools and devices is eliminated from the organization. This will allow the accounts department to allocate the costs that will be saved through this attempt in other important sections which would aid the expansion of the organization and the improvement of its infrastructure. Project Review from Finance Service Sector Every business activity that is carried out is regulated by certain laws and policies that vary from one country to the other. In Australia, all the financial services, operations and activities are regulated by a body called Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC). It is an independent body that acts as a corporate regulator for Australia. All the financial transactions and activities that are executed by Aztek must adhere to the ASIC rules and guidelines. There is also an ethical and professional code of conduct that is followed and implemented in Australia irrespective of the business sector which is called Australian Code of Conduct (ASC). The project activities must also confirm to the same. Nowadays, the payment processes executed are mostly electronic in nature. These e-payments are processed and managed by the e-payments code and regulation that comes under ASIC which shall be adhered to. Financial information comes under the classification of sensitive and critical information. It must be protected from all sorts of security risks and attacks and therefore, Intellectual Property rights shall be implemented in such systems. BYOD Description: Financial Aspects Aztek is a finance company that has its own bundle of goals, aims and objectives. Some of the primary points in the list include: The financial services that are provided to the clients are secure, reliable and accurate. Employees of Aztek are satisfied and the engagement percentage with the company grows higher in every quarter. Customers of Aztek are satisfied and the engagement percentage with the company grows higher in every quarter. Meeting the deadlines, estimates and delivery dates for every project. BYOD project that has been approved by the management has its own goals which are in-line with the company aims and goals. With the implementation of the BYOD project, the employee-owned devices will be used for the execution of the business operations. These devices will have the company tools, applications and mechanisms deployed so that employees may use them for the execution of business tasks and for exploring the systems as well. This will make them aware of the in-depth functioning which will improve the reliability of the service and the productivity of the employees as well. They will not be required to stay for enhanced period of time in the company locations as they may operate the functions from their homes as well. The reliability and quality of service will improve which will lead to the improvement of the customer expectations as well. The customers will be provided with the financial solutions as per the promised date of delivery which will enhance their engagement with Aztek. The entire set of activities will be streamlined and the risks associated with schedule and budget will be avoided as a result. There will be many of the financial benefits that will be provided to Aztek with the implementation of BYOD. The employees will bring their personal devices to the office which will eliminate the cost of procurement along with the infrastructural costs of setting up these devices at the workstations of the employees. Operational costs will also come down as the number of operational errors along with the need to work on a particular requirement again and again will be elimiated (Gessner, 2016). Cost of testing may be considerably high as there are many additional tools that are necessary in certain business processes. These tools will already be available with the employees which will bring down costs in this section as well (Retailwire, 2016). IT Security Policies Procedures Changes and Updates Lowering down of the costs is one of the major benefits that are offered by BYOD to the organizations in which it is implemented. There are several other benefits that are provided by this scheme in terms of improved work life balance and satisfaction levels for the employees, streamlining of the business activities, better customer satisfaction levels and many more. On the other hand, there may also be many challenges that may emerge with the use and implementation of BYOD. One of the major items under the challenges that may come up includes the security issues and risks. These security issues may fall under the categories of data security risks, network security risks, device security risks and likewise. The security plan that is currently implemented in Aztek has been designed as per the information security and the nature of projects that are carried out in the organization. There are measures suggested to control the risks associated with the current elements in association with Aztek with no mention of BYOD as it is being implemented for the first time. Therefore, the changes will be necessary in the security policies and procedures which will require a risk assessment and management of all the security risks associated with the BYOD scheme and project. There will primarily be three categories of threats and security risks that will come up with the use and implementation of BYOD. These will include information security risks, network security risks and device security risks. The devices of the employees may or may not confirm to the security requirements of Aztek. Before sanctioning the use of such employee-owned device in the organization, the IT department must carry out a security review of these devices. It shall be equipped with the security tools, security tags and applications for easy tracking and security control (Coleman, 2011). The information and network security risks shall be assessed and the controls shall accordingly be designed and implemented. There shall also be an update on the back-up schedule that must be done along with enhanced forms of disaster recovery controls. Apart from these three risk areas and categories, there may also be risks caused and executed through the device owners, that is, the employees of Aztek. They might use the devices and the organization-oriented applications in the devices on their home networks or the public networks. This may lead to increase in the risk probability as the network security will be weak in such cases. The critical applications and information shall, therefore, be locked out as soon as the employee disconnects from the office network. This shall be included under the security policy and only the less critical applications and public data and information shall be accessible from other networks (Newton, 2015). The employees shall also be provided with the knowledge and information on the best security practices that they must follow. This shall include the preservation and protection of the devices and information from unauthorized users, such as, their family and friends (Trendmicro, 2016). The security procedures and policies must be upgraded as per the security state around the BYOD scheme. Risk Assessment Procedure for BYOD Risk is defined as an occurrence that may cause considerable damage to the party or the system in which it takes place. It is an event that has a specific impact that may be low to high and a specific probability related with it and the combination of these attributes determine its level (Crane, 2013). The impact of a risk is mostly negative and which is why it is desired to avoid the risks that may take place. Risk Management The risks that are identified in association with BYOD will be required to be managed with a defined process. The process will have five steps or phases that will be involved and it is these steps that will determine the overall management of the risks. The five set of processes that will be involved are shown below and a description has also been added for the same. Risk Management for BYOD in Aztek In order to manage the risks, it will be required to have details on the risks that may take place. The first phase will identify the possible risks and the information regarding the same will be investigated from different information sources (Capterra, 2016). These sources may comprise of the organization itself, the employees of the organization, market study etc (Berg, 2016). One the risks are listed and identified, there specific probability and impact will be required to be analyzed and assessed. In the second process, the risk management and security team must pick up every identified risk one by one and determine the impact of the risk on the basis of its probability, nature and type (Castsoftware, 2016). The treatment of the risk will be based upon its associated impact and likelihood along with the nature of the risk. There are different strategies and methods to treat a risk and the same shall be evaluated and applied. The risk treatment process will be required to be closely monitored and controlled by carrying out the security reviews and audits by the senior officials and authorities (Microsoft, 2016). A track on the same shall also be maintained in terms of the treatment activities that are completed, treatment activities that are pending and likewise. A report shall be prepared for the final submission once the risk is completely treated and the likelihood of its occurrence is reduced to zero (Vila, 2012). Risk Register ID Name of the Risk Likelihood (5 is highest and 1 is lowest) Impact (5 is highest and 1 is lowest) Risk Description Risk Ranking (Likelihood x Impact) RAZ1 Data Breaches 4 4 The financial information associated with the organization may be accessed and exposed to the entities not authorized to view or access it. 16 RAZ2 Data Loss Leakage 4 4 The information may get disclosed to the entities not authorized to use and view it on the network and the contents of the same may also get lost (Informationweek, 2016) 16 RAZ3 Hacking of Accounts 3 5 The accounts activities and controls may be hacked by an hacker so that the account information is acquired and misused. These may include user accounts, database accounts etc. 15 RAZ4 Security Loopholes 3 3 BYOD is a first of its kind project that will be implemented in Aztek. There may be improper device scanning or sanctioning of unsecured devices that may be done leading to increase in attack probability (Grimes, 2016) 9 RAZ5 SQL Injection 3 3 Aztek is a huge organization that has many databases in use for the information and data management. These may be attacked by using malicious SQL queries (Usask, 2017) 9 RAZ6 Denial of Service 4 5 The employees and the customers of Aztek may be exempted from using the services and systems by flooding them with unwanted and unnecessary traffic (Stoneburner, 2002) 20 RAZ7 Device Loss and Stealing 2 5 The employee-owned devices may get accidentally broken or lost or may be tracked by an attacker to capture it for getting access to critical applications and information sets 10 RAZ8 Malware Threats 5 3 The employee devices and the information sets may be infected with the malware of different kinds 15 RAZ9 Phishing Attacks 3 4 Users may be tricked by disguising as an authentic entity and the sensitive information such as their account passwords, PIN details etc. may be asked for misuse 12 RAZ10 Eavesdropping Attacks 3 4 Internal or external networks that are used in the Aztek organization for execution of business operations may be targeted and they may be monitored in unauthorized manner 12 There may also be risks caused and executed through the device owners, that is, the employees of Aztek. These attacks may be intentional in nature which would come under the insider threats category or may be accidental as well. The employees might use the devices and the organization-oriented applications in the devices on their home networks or the public networks. This may lead to increase in the risk probability as the network security will be weak in such cases (Qld, 2016). They may also disclose the critical information in front of their family members or friends. Such are the examples of accidental threats with employees as the threat agents. However, when the employees deliberately share such details with the other parties, then the security of the organizational information and assets is put at risk and the threats are classified as deliberate insider attacks (Markovic-Petrovic Stojanovic, 2014). Data Security Types of Data, Possible Risks, User Roles Privileges Information and data have become the most important assets for the business units in the present times. This is because the amount of these data sets has immensely increased and there is also a wide variety of data that is being used by the business organizations. Aztek also uses and manages vast data sets which include the financial details, business information, stakeholder information, customer and employee details etc (Scu, 2016). These data sets are required to be classified in different categories so that the management and processing of the same is simplified. In case of Aztek, there are various information types, such as sensitive and critical information, information sets for office use only, confidential data, public data and private data. There are data security risks that are associated with all of such information categories with varying degree of impact. For instance, the impact of a security attack on a sensitive information set will be higher than the same attack on public data sets (Test-institute, 2016). There are different data security risks, such as, data breaches, data loss and leakage, data alteration, denial of service etc. that may be executed on the Aztek data sets (Chapman, 2000). Proper handling and management of these data sets from the security point of view will be necessary so that the data sets are protected. These various categories of information must be allocated and granted with the specific data operations as per the information type and the user type. The information categories that come under sensitive, confidential or for office use only categories must be accessible only by the data administrator, security manager and director along with the CEO of the company. The execution of the operations such as data updates and data modifications must be allowed to be done by the security manager or the data administrator only. A security log of such activities shall be made and stored. The other data sets, such as private data sets must be accessible to the data scientists and analysts along with the security analysts. It must be allowed to be updated or modified by the data administrator only. The public data shall be visible to all the stakeholders of Aztek and must be modified by the security manager or data administrator only. Conclusion A risk assessment and management of the various risk areas and security threats associated with Aztek has been done in the sections above. The company has decided to implement Bring Your Own Devices (BYOD) project in the organization. The project will be feasible from the technical, operational and economical aspects and will offer many benefits, especially in the area of costs and finances. Lowering down of the costs is one of the major benefits that are offered by BYOD to the organizations in which it is implemented. There will primarily be three categories of threats and security risks that will come up with the use and implementation of BYOD. These will include information security risks, network security risks and device security risks. There may also be insider threats and attacks that may get executed. The risks that are identified in association with BYOD will be required to be managed with a defined process. The process will have five steps or phases that will be involved as risk identification, risk assessment, risk treatment, risk control and risk tracking and report. This will lead to the avoidance and prevention of the risks. There will also be many different data types that will be involved with Aztek that shall be managed with adequate information classification and security management. References Berg, H. (2016). Nazi Essays - The Holocaust, Human Rights Abuses, Heinrich Himmler

Nazi miles long. They would walk all this way, if they couldn't keep up they would be shot. If they broke their ankle or leg or just couldn't go on for any reason, they would either be shot or left there to die. If the Nazi's thought they were just trying to fool them, so they could run when everyone else got far enough away, then the Nazi would shoot him or her in the leg or somewhere so they couldn't move, and just leave them their to die. A total of about 250,000 people died during them. The Nazi's also murdered them. They would line them up, one behind another, then shoot a bullet to see how many people they could shoot through with one bullet. Then, they would move the dead out of the way and do it again. They would also line the bodies up along huge pits in the ground, that other prisoners have dug. They would be forced to remove their closes, and then the Nazi's would take turns shooting them in the back or the back of the head. Then they would just let them fall into the pit. If t hey were lucky the shot would kill them, if they weren't, they would be covered with other dead bodies and then when the pit got full of them, they were covered with dirt. It is estimated about 261,000 inmates died in Auschwitz. About 80,000 of those deaths was from the infamous death marches. They are packed so tightly into the railroad cars that they can't even squat to sit, much less lie down to sleep. They ride for two days with no food, no water, no toilet facilities--with only dirty straw on the floor. They finally arrive at their destination, glad to finally be breathing fresh air when the cattle car doors are pulled open. Instead they are greeted with shouts of anger, with guns and bayonets pointed at them, and with guards holding back police dogs ready to tear them apart. A stench fills the air. Some prisoners were assigned to the most gruesome task -- that of the Sonderkommando. These prisoners were forced to work in the crematoria, burning the Jews who had just been gassed. All prisoners who were selected for forced labor were tattooed with numbers on their left arms. Any slip, outburst, or failure to comply with the guards resulted in immediate death. Because executions by gunfire were inefficient, expensive, and potentially identifiable, intoxication by poison gas--a method used by the Germans to kill over 50,000 mental patients since 1939--was agreed on as the method of choice. Zyclon was originally brought to Auschwitz as a disinfectant and vermin killer. On September 3, 1941, Fritzsch experimented with Zyclon B. on 600 Russian prisoners of war and 250 tubercular patients. He was amazed at the number of people who could be killed at once. History

People Who Can Help You on Election Day

People Who Can Help You on Election Day When voters walk into a busy polling place on election day, they see a vast array of people, most of them rushing around, doing lots of different things. Who are these people and what is their function in the election? Besides (hopefully) lots of other voters waiting to vote, youll see: Poll Workers These people are here to help you vote. They check voters in, making sure they are registered to vote and are at the correct polling place. They hand out ballots and show voters where to deposit their ballots after voting. Perhaps most importantly, poll workers can show voters how to use the particular type of voting device being used. If you have any problems using the voting machines or are not sure how to use the machine to complete your ballot, by all means, ask a poll worker. Poll workers either volunteer or are paid a very small stipend. They are not full-time government employees. They are people who are donating their time to help make sure elections are conducted fairly and efficiently. If you run into any problems while voting or waiting to vote, ask a poll worker to help you. If you make a mistake while filling out your ballot, let a poll worker know before you leave the polling place. The poll worker can give you a new ballot. Your old ballot will either be destroyed or placed in a separate ballot box for damaged or incorrectly marked ballots. Election judges At most polling places, there will be one or two election officials or election judges. Some states require one Republican and one Democratic election judge at each polling place. Election judges ensure that the election is conducted fairly. They settle disputes over voter qualification and identification, deal with damaged and incorrectly marked ballots and take care of any other issues involving interpretation and enforcement of election laws. In states that allow Election Day voter registration, election judges also register new voters on Election Day. Election judges officially open and close the polling place and are responsible for the safe and secure delivery of sealed ballot boxes to the vote counting facility after the polls close. As regulated by state laws, election judges are chosen by a board of elections, county official, city or town official, or state official. If an election judge appears to be â€Å"too young to vote† to you, 41 of 50 states allow high school students to serve as election judges or poll workers, even when the students are not yet old enough to vote. Laws in these states typically require that students selected as election judges or poll workers be at least 16 years of age and in good academic standing at their schools.   Other Voters Hopefully, you will see many other voters inside the polling place, waiting their turn to vote. Once inside the polling place, voters may not try to convince others how to vote. In some states, such politicking is prohibited both inside and outside within a certain distance of the doors of the polling place. Exit Poll Takers Especially at lager precincts, exit poll takers, usually representing the media, may ask people leaving the polling place which candidates they voted for. Voters are NOT required to respond to exit poll takers.

Shane Essays - English-language Films, Shane, Homestead Acts

Shane Essays - English-language Films, Shane, Homestead Acts Shane Shane is a classic example of western fiction in which Schaefer contrasts the values of the isolated family farm with the lawlessness of the cowtown. Shane, the gunfighter protagonist, attempts to find peace with the farmers but can only help clear away the violence for the civilization the farmers bring. Schaefer reveals the difficult struggles of homesteaders who fight to bring justice to an ungoverned land, and strives to fulfill the hopes and promises of prosperity to their families. The reality in the struggles of these farmers were supported with an accurate correspondence to history (e.g. The Homestead Act) and with detailed and atmospheric languages. The language is easily understandable and helps the reader to better comprehend the book. It is simply a great page turner. Although it is a fictional work, it does not fail to portray the harsh life style of the westerners of the 1800's. While the book depicts some of the western struggles, it adds an element of suspense as a novel as well with the battle between a protagonist and antagonists. Images of blood occur often in the book to emphasize the risk involved in living a western life, especially where justice does not exist. The simple language of the book does not hinder from creating its lively images, rather it makes it easier for the readers to comprehend the book. The absence of flashbacks or allusions further strengthens the simplicity of the book. The story is told through the eyes of an omniscient observer who especially concentrates on the Starrett family. Such concentration does not allow the reader to observe the lifestyles of other homesteaders; the Starrett family basically symbolizes the homesteader of that era. This particular view- point favors the triumph of good versus the evil. This old-fashioned philosophy on the battles between the good versus evil is still a universal theme, and therefore is able to appeal to today's young readers. Despite the brevity of the book, Schaefer has included all the necessary items to describe the lives of homesteaders: the struggle against famines, the competition for more land, etc. The author has limited the sophistication of its language because the novel is geared toward younger ages, and to tell the lives of simple homesteaders in a simple and undisguised way. Furthermore, the author has admirably utilized its simple language to bring a novel filled with gracious images of hope and death. The universal theme of good versus evil creates the suspense required for the novel and is appealing even to the modern society. This novel is more than a mere juvenile literature because it teaches the cruelty of life in the society by using the homesteader, which can be better related to adults.

Air pollution in US Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Air pollution in US - Essay Example Air pollution has had adverse effects on the people of the US. Indoor air pollution may trigger allergic reactions in sensitive individuals, including asthma, respiratory-tract infections, emphysema, cardiovascular diseases and bronchitis (Phalen and Phalen 30). Some effects may be fatal or severely debilitating such as cancer, heart disease and some respiratory diseases and may only be noticed after repeated or long periods of exposure. Treatable effects include irritation of the nose, eyes and throat, dizziness, fatigue and headaches. The effects of outdoor pollutants include permanent lung damage, irritation of the respiratory system, asthma attacks, susceptibility to respiratory infections and acute bronchitis (EPA). Some have severe effects such as lead which accumulates in bones and adversely affects kidney function, the nervous system, cardiovascular system as well as developmental and reproductive systems. Environmentally, air pollution is responsible for climate change and g lobal warming through the greenhouse effect. It is important that air pollution is reduced to levels that have minimal environmental and health effects. Statistics from EPA show significant reduction of the emission of pollutant gases in the period between 2000 and 2012. Carbon monoxide emission reduced by 51%, lead by 50%, while that of sulfur dioxide reduced by 66%. In line with this, EPA promulgates regulations that should be followed by individual citizens, businesses, communities and states.

535 Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

535 - Essay Example But, the site can only be as good as the vendors allow, if they do not have a suitable demo and papers on the site then the site is simply wasting time. Some vendors appear to want the manager looking at their own site which is OK if the manager knows they exist, I can imagine many managers would not have a clue though. Which is why there is a need for the comparison site and a re-think by vendors who do not allow people to see anything useful. The vendors who do have demos on the site vary; again I found it difficult to get a good comparison between SAP and Epicor for example. They both have demos but they were very different. The SAP site showed costs and ideas of the software but not a single screenshot of it in action. Epicor had a great demo which I think all the vendors should follow, it gave me a good idea of the software and how it works and I know I can contact them for more information and costs. So if they all did this then the comparison web site would be very useful to managers of a company and should help sales of the vendor’s products. The main complaint I have about the comparison web site itself is the number of times I had to register my details. The Hotmail account is loading with sales stuff which would irritate me as a busy

Human Beings Essay Example for Free

Human Beings Essay A. Holmes 2013 ENG140, Week 7, Assignment Stacey A. Holmes 2013 ENG140, Week 7, Assignment Essay 3 Summary and Response (Draft 2) Ivy Bridge at Tiffin University ENG 140 April 25 Essay 3 Summary and Response (Draft 2) Ivy Bridge at Tiffin University ENG 140 April 25 Author and world renowned Philosopher, Dr. Peter Singer who is currently at Yale University, defines terms such as â€Å"Personhood† and â€Å"Speciesism† rather distinctively, and he does it in a way, that does not fit in with most of societies’ ideas of what represents the meaning of either, personhood (such as an infant not being a â€Å"person† because it is not yet self-aware, but a dolphin being a â€Å"person† because it can recognize itself in a mirror) or discrimination (he describes individuals who eat meat as being speciesist, because he or she doesn’t take into consideration the feelings of the animal or the animal’s desire to continue on living). When asked the question â€Å"What is a person? † Most would answer by saying, â€Å"A  person  is a being, such as a  human, that has certain mental capacities or attributes constituting  personhood, which in turn could be defined differently by different authors in different disciplines and by different cultures in different times and places†. The definition for human being is â€Å"a member of any of the races of  Homo sapiens;  person; man, woman, or child† (Collins English Dictionary – Complete and Unabridged  Ã‚ © HarperCollins  Publishers, 2003). When asked to give the definition for a person, Singer, who is currently at Yale University; describes a person as â€Å"Someone who is aware of their own existence over time, is aware enough to realize that they are the same being that lived previously; who can expect to live into the future† (Singer, Peter. (2008, January 28th). Human Use of Animals [http://www. open. edu/openlearn/history-the-arts/culture/philosophy/human-use-animals]. Singer believes that some non-human animals have individuality and could be considered â€Å"persons†; describing some human beings who lack mental capacity and attributes (i. . intellectual disability, dementia, brain injury, mental illness and even infants) as non-persons, because there is†¦ no awareness of a past, present or future being. Singer says that these human beings are still showed compassion, respect, and regard. So, why aren’t we (human beings/persons) capable of showing that same compassion towards animals or non-humans? He argues that we should be able to recognize that animals are aware of their being, are aware of their past and present, that they have a desire to live, and are also very conscience of the way they are treated by human beings. He also believes that they understand suffering. He says that human beings or â€Å"persons† should be more evolved to think that there is no suffering for these animals. Singer thinks that we should be more concerned for them individually, think about what would be in their best interest, and take in consideration the things that could be bad for them or quite possibly, be harming them; rather than, using them for our own wants, needs, and desires. Society has a total disregard for animals and the fact that they are suffering, because our need for what the animal has to offer us is greater; lbeit sustenance, experimental purposes, etc†¦ (Singer, Peter. (2006, December 11th). The Colbert Report [http://www. colbertnation. com/the-colbert-report-videos/79412/december-11-2006/peter-singer]. Singer argues that this total disregard for animals’ is what he deems as speciesism (which is much like racism only targeted toward other species), and that those who practice thi s (speciesism) are speciesist (someone who has prejudices towards species other than their own). Singer says that â€Å"Some animals have a higher moral status than some humans and that our disregard for animal suffering is a deplorable moral blind spot† (Singer, Peter. (2008, January 28th). Human Use of Animals [http://www. open. edu/openlearn/history-the-arts/culture/philosophy/human-use-animals]. I am bipartisan to his argument; I can neither agree nor disagree with his philosophy. Singer makes some valid points in his argument. He says that animals â€Å"non-humans† have the same capacities or attributes that some human beings have, implicating that a non-human could potentially be categorized as a â€Å"person†. He also states that we should recognize that animals or non-humans have an acknowledgement of self and of suffering. Lastly, Singer speaks of the way that human beings or persons should care for animals. These can be categorized as â€Å"reasonable assumptions†. I believe that animals could be categorized as persons. Because, I do believe that they are fully aware, just as aware (if not more, than some human beings) as we are, of their past, present and future being. I also believe that animals are aware of their suffering and, who is causing the suffering. I also think that as human beings we should show more compassion, respect and regard toward animals, in all aspects, of our need, use, want or desire for them. But, as a Christian, I believe that all things serve a â€Å"Divine Purpose† and that mankind (human beings) remains at the top of the food chain. And God blessed Noah and his sons, and said unto them, be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth. And the fear of you and the dread of you shall be upon every beast of the earth, and upon every fowl of the air, upon all that moveth upon the earth, and upon all the fishes of the sea; into your hand are they delivered. Every  moving  thing that liveth shall be meat for you; even as the green herb have I given you all things. But flesh with the life thereof, which is the blood thereof, shall ye not eat† (The Holy Bible, KJV, Genesis 9:1-4). Scripture says that all things on the Earth are for us (human beings) and that there isn’t anything that we could not eat (or use for our purposes) other than another human. If God can take into the consideration the â€Å"feelings† of the beings that He created, and still give them to us (humans) for sustenance. Then who are we (the created) to say that it’s wrong? Well, Singer also suggests that even infants aren’t fully aware of there being, there present, past and/or future and I say to that; If they were afforded the time then they would certainly be aware of these things. So, that statement holds no validity for me. I could understand if his philosophy, applied only toward those that have any intellectual disabilities, dementia, brain injuries, and mental illnesses his statement would have more substance. But, at some point and time; infants would eventually be considered persons. When looking back at my own experience with infants (my children and grandchildren), I felt as if the child’ knew exactly who I was and that we had this â€Å"mutual understanding† and affection for one another. Or it could be very possible for the infant to never fully develop. Who knows with life, it’s too unpredictable. But once again, that is just the nature of life, I do not believe that we were meant to know or have knowledge of everything. I respectfully disagree with Dr. Singer’s analysis of infants. But, I think that his analysis could be applied to people who lack in mental capacities. This subject for me is simply the rules of nature, no more, no less. It is just in the laws of nature to be either prey or predator. Animals’ or non-humans may have full awareness of their suffering and we as humans should create a better environment for animals (that we use for our â€Å"purposes†) so that they don’t have to endure a tremendous amount of suffering. Farmers, Scientist and the general public alike should make changes in the laws that regulate the treatment of animals. Society as a whole should not be so vain to think that we are the only species on Earth that can feel, love, think, and desire, hurt and/or suffer. But, I disagree with Singer when he suggests that we start treating animals with the same moral composition that we show our fellow human beings. Animals are just, simply put†¦not our equals. Yes, my mother who suffers from dementia is going to receive better treatment from me than my dog, cat, fish, bird, llama etc†¦That will never happen (animals as humans equals) in my opinion. I don’t see a comparison between my mother, who has taken care of me for the majority of my life, and an animal. Human beings should start treating the animals’ that provide us nourishment, clothing, friendship and the list goes on, with more compassion and allotting them the quality, respect and dignity of life that someone could say to them in the end â€Å" You lived a full, dignified and â€Å"good life†. Play and Spoken Language Development Essay -- Child Development

The Plowden report (1967) published the intrinsic worth of play as the central approach of acquiring knowledge in the early years of children’s lives. The word play cannot be easily defined because it always depends on the contexts and the contexts also vary. There are different forms of play such as fantasy play, free flow play, constructive play, imaginative play, role play, socio-dramatic play, structured play, pretend play and heuristic play. These forms of play are categorised as â€Å"Play as learning†, and â€Å"Play as Practice† (Macintyre 2001:6). Moyles (2005), states that it is quite adverse that the phrase play has numerous meanings, and this makes parents to be wary of it. Meckley (2002) in his framework suggests that all different types of play involves varieties of activities and behaviours which results in diverse developmental and learning outcomes. Research suggest that the means to spoken language development in children’s brain is hearing language consistently because it is as a result of this that they would be able to speak (Brotherson,2005).There are evidences that toddlers who experience d talking with their mothers when they were infants have advanced vocabularies and a firm foundation for future communication. Snow (1997) claims that children who are deprived of language experiences at age four encounter a breach which barely expands over the school years. Claxton (1984) defined play as a method and approach which offer learning culture in which children’s fundamental learning needs can be met. He argued that these needs include the chance to communicate, question, interact with others and be part of a wider social experience in which flexibility, lenience and self –discipline are crucial. Moreover, different typ... ... principles, 2008).The EYFS has been a statutory requirement ever since 2008 for each and every ofsted registered settings. Furthermore, contributions from brain research have presented a lot of backups for the early years as a time for nurturing children’s learning holistically. Children’s communications and early experiences while they play has impact on the way the brain develops, and assist in shaping its formation(Shore,1997).This research, acknowledged the value of play as a â€Å"scaffold for development, a vehicle for increasing neural structures, and a means by which all children practice skills they will need in later life†(Isenberg&Quisenberry,2002:33). Meek (1985),proposed that it is through reading activities that children will start to learn a bit regarding metalinguistics, the language of language, and the concepts of words.

The Standard Of Quality In Vietnamese Primary School Education Essay

Education has ever been an of import issue for all states at all times. Primary instruction is a basic status to better peoples knowledge. The original base is really of import to develop kids to go good citizens of the state. Many undertakings have been conducted to analyze the learning responsibilities of instructors, installations, instructional stuffs. Cipher can deny the importance of instruction but how to better the quality in instruction is another job. There are many facets to measure the instruction system from the societal factors, national, the instructor ‘s pedagogical ability, module, installations, substructure or the ability to comprehension and involvement of students. There are 1000s ground make instruction more of import such as the manner individual behaviour, the manner they talk, thinks, do everything, is successful key to open future door. Nowadays, companies, workss, infirmary, schoolsaˆÂ ¦ used practical scientific discipline, high engineering and besides requires staffs with high cognition. Education is non merely the lessons in school but besides practical lessons from life. Primary school ‘s instruction is a necessary portion which is the most of import and basic to take to the higher cognition. Hanoi is capital of Vietnam, where integrate economic, cultural, and policy with other state. It make the preparation procedure to make high rational people become an highly pressing job which requires many factors and one of them is the criterion of quality in Vietnamese Primary school. The criterion is assessed through students ‘ criterions, criterion of instructors and possible fiscal. Many people attribute the quality of learning from instructors, installation conditions, the instruction system†¦ But in my personal sentiment the comprehension and the interesting of topics are the job should be addressed. Normally, when the kids from school go back, the parents frequently ask them â€Å" how many Markss did you acquire? † Or â€Å" today what did the instructor Tell at school? † but taking attention and educating the kids are the duty of the full society, non the merely of the school. But criterion of students besides depends on many other factors such as the involvement of the household for the kid ‘s acquisition, the kid ‘s physical, ability to grok and private nature of the kid, or the investing and policy of societal. Education is extremely valued in Vietnamese society and the authorities ever regards instruction as a beginning of direct investing for the hereafter. First precedence has been set to supply basic instruction for all kids and instruction / preparation on the basic rate for kids who meet the entry demands. Every state has it ain alone and jobs. We can non copy the success plans from one topographic point and use them to another topographic point. Vietnam needs to develop plans and their content based on which Vietnam and based on the existent conditions of the installations in your state.2.2 Research QuestionsThis research analyze what factor did impact the criterion of primary schools. This research will lend a portion to assist Vietnamese Primary schools in Hanoi more develop in quality of instruction. Research inquiries: What are Vietnamese students ‘ criterions in Primary schools? What issues do consequence to quality criterions in Vietnamese Primary school?2.3 Objective of ResearchTo mensurate the criterions of students in Vietnamese schools To place the issues affected Vietnamese Primary school ‘s quality criterions.3. Literature ReappraisalConcept of choice standard definition in Primary school There are many different constructs of quality criterions such as assessed by the survey consequences, the ability to use their cognition in pattern, general cognition, It is must corroborate foremost that Vietnam is really focussed on instruction particularly for paediatric ages. Harmonizing to Law Education Elementary Schools passed by the National Assembly on 06.30.1991, Vietnam to implement policy compulsory primary instruction from grade 1 to rate 5 for all Vietnamese kids aged 6 to 14 old ages. For pupils start in 1st class ‘s age and degree of apprehension of the pupils are the same. Presently, simple school students have to take 11 faculties with degree 3, 4, 5 and with flat 1st and 2nd are 6 faculties. In the Vietnamese school, students must hold to develop all facet, such as Knowledge – Ethic – Artistic – Physical. Harmonizing to the Vietnamese Ministry of Education is pupil must run into the undermentioned standards: First, Vietnamese grade degree is 10 and students must accomplish norm above 5.Secondly, moralss must be reviews above centrist ( the moral evaluation: good, just, moderate, weak, and hapless ) . In 2000, Viet Nam has achieved national criterions of literacy and primary instruction. From the 2002-2003, the grownup literacy rate in the 15-24 age group was about 95 % , the mean figure of old ages of schooling of the population reached 7.3 old ages ( Nguyen, et Al. 2005 ) Assess criterion of quality of Vietnamese school in Hanoi. There are many criterions to measure criterion of quality in Vietnamese school such as high-quality criterions school ( must run into the criterions that the Vietnamese Ministry of Education demands ) . These schools are accepted high-quality criterions must run into the undermentioned standards: Teachers have to extremely choice criterion, survey consequences of students are high, fiscal resources or otherwise is installations and substructure criterions ( Nguyen, V.C.,2012 ) . There are all instructors have trained standard makings as prescribed, 100 % of instructors with appropriate makings for learning topics, in which at least 30 % of instructors were recognized municipal criterions. There are dropout rate and no more than 6 % one-year repeats, in which the dropout rate does non transcend 1 % . Students with outstanding accomplishments 3 % or more, rather accomplishing a 35 % or more, sort of weak, less than 5 % . Behavioral graded really good, good at 80 % or more, sort of weak no more than 2 % †¦ And last but non least are installations and equipment to run into the instruction demands. Measure the quality criterion of Vietnamese Primary school in Hanoi Hanoi is the capital of Vietnam, with a population around 6,561,900 people. The studies shown in September 2012 showed overload in primary schools. In many schools have the mean registration of each category of about 40-60 students. Although, sum of cognition that pupils get in primary schools in Hanoi are extremely appreciated, a figure of pupils base on balls more than 99 % , figure of students with first-class academic public presentation and good more than 70 % . Every twelvemonth Hanoi has pupils participate in the international competition and won the award as mathematics, art and music. Harmonizing to the Vietnamese Ministry of Education have 5,912 primary schools, but a figure of primary schools in Hanoi are merely 556 public schools and over 200 private primary schools. Harmonizing to Vu, V ( 2012 ) in which have 267 primary schools run intoing the national criterion schools. Dr. Hamid Chachoua, LIG Research Institute, University of Grenoble 1 – France has had treatments with the VietNamNet about Mathematics he said on the position of a mathematician, he found mathematics instruction in Vietnam is an first-class instruction in footings of mathematics content being taught in schools.4. Research ModelEvery state, in every part or even in different periods will necessitate different criterions of instruction such as in states are faced with war, dearth, or disease, if require for all kids have to cognize how to read and compose is a hard. Research theoretical account: from the practical and larn more experience from other state.4.1 Standards of studentsFirst, we will discourse about the making of students. Primary instruction in Vietnam includes five degrees. When the kids entered primary school is when kids begin to update the new information, the basic cognition to the demands tougher. That clip, the kids reasonably active and their logical statements are immature, but the ability to absorb really rapidly and wonder help them ever longed to cognize more new information. Learning in kindergarten and acquisition in primary schools is really different. In Primary Schools, kids get an sum of cognition bigger than in kindergarten. Harmonizing to Vietnamese parlance is â€Å" The first measure is ever the hardest measure † , Children before come ining simple school are a wellness cheque, believing ability, IQ†¦ so they are qualified kid physically, mentally and intellectually to analyze. The secondly is their cognition, and past experience. Both of them, the cognition and past experience are merely few. In kindergarten, they were larning Numberss, the alphabet, simple computations but with reading and make math are rather job. Whereas keeping of kids really rapidly, they are easy to copy or sensitive to new things. They should be more witting in their acquisition, and is responsible for finishing the undertakings of lesson. Through five degrees, these kids have the basic cognition to go on on their manner to derive new cognition as luggage for their hereafter. Last, criterions of pupil rating precisely the most is the students graduated. They are students who finish their class and they are equipped with the basic cognition that have plenty knowledge to go on analyzing at the secondary schools, understanding of society, can self-face and manage hard state of affairss. They are people who clearly reflect the quality of their school. Knowledge in Primary Schools is the first tool will follow them throughout their lives from secondary school, high school, college, university and even when they go to work. The marks are the student ‘s ratio who banned from school every twelvemonth, the student ‘s ratio graduated wants to analyze in this school, the students ratio graduated with high accomplishment, the student ‘s ratio who can utilize adept English, the student ‘s ratio who can utilize fluently computing machine, per centum of students achieved the national award or in the universe.4.2 Teachers ‘ criterionHarmoniz ing to Nguyen, TA. ( 2008 ) , teacher is one in 3 most of import elements will act upon school ‘s quality. Teachers must hold good category direction accomplishments, expertness and pedagogical cognition every bit good as good communicating accomplishments. Primary school instructors should be people with many accomplishments, in add-on professional capableness must be knowing of the assorted countries such as cognition of societal psychological science of kids and immature near. Regularly, the instructors update the new cognition, construct lesson programs, course of study to do exhilaration for lessons. Teachers to use new engineering in talks and cite the paperss in the domestic every bit good as foreign. Harmonizing to Dang, H. ( 2001 ) quality instructors can be formed in many different ways, including preparation, retraining of cognition, that is an of import function. Therefore, the first in edifice and better the quality of instructors start from the attention of the preparation, retraining and lives of instructors. Over the old ages, preparation and retraining of instructors has been interested and have changed. The type of preparation and retraining as long-run and short-run with a batch of content in conformity with the different capable instructors. However, besides these consequences, the preparation and retraining of some defects, the quality of the instruction after preparation and retraining still have certain restrictions. Ministry of Education is doing sensible accommodations in order to better the quality of instruction. Harmonizing to Pham, H. ( 1999 ) Vietnam ‘s instruction system has been strengthened, construct pedagogical schools, train instructors who have high quality, and passion with their occupation. Presently, most of the primary school instructors are qualified, high pedagogical cognition, good communicating accomplishments and enthusiasm with instruction. However, the wage of primary school instructors is low. The Ministry of Education is sing to the instructor ‘s salary is increased. In position of Roberd L, L. ( 2008 ) criterions for competent instructor in educational appraisal of students.4.3 Fiscal resources and investing financessThe ability of finance and investing financess are the factors that straight affect the substructure, installations and instruction tools. Infrastructure and instruction tools is ever one of the most importance factors affected standard schools. First of all, budget affected stuff installations in school. In Viet Nam, the stuff installations prepare for learning in school is non plenty, sketchy and outdated. The Numberss of students is step-up every twelvemonth but the Numberss of public archpriest schools and private archpriest schools do non look to alter. Because budget expends for instruction is non plenty, and need attending of authorities, whole societal, and domestic and foreign givers. Furthermore, fiscal besides influence research scientific discipline and talk. Furthermore limited investing cost could take hapless material installation ( Nguyen, 2006 ) . As mentioned above, the mean wage of primary school instructors are rather low, largely is little budget. Teacher ‘s wage is excessively low is one of the causes of late twelvemonth ‘s pupils of teaching method rate decreased significantly, and affect hard to happen instructors who have high degree in learning accomplishments. Ability to finance and investing financess influence entire cost for learning and acquisition, entire cost for library, Numberss of book and paperss review on each instructor and student, figure of room and furniture, projectors, speakersaˆÂ ¦ make criterion. Harmonizing to Le ( 2010 ) computing machine systems use for acquisition and instruction, web system supports for larning and learning and use more advanced cognition, experiences in the universe.5. Research MethodologiesThere are three the ways used in research methods ( Sherri L. Jakson 2011 ) . The first is descriptive in nature ; the 2nd is prognostic in nature and the last 1 is explanatory in nature. There are two methods to back up the research which are inductively and deductively. Harmonizing to Veal ( 2005 ) each research can treat in one method or two methods depend on the practical state of affairss and issues to be studied. Inductive usage theory, that was publish but deductive usage hypothesis base from informations.5.1 Qualitative researchHarmonizing to Hussey and Hussey ( 1997 ) research methodological analysiss have two rules, which are qualitative and quantitative. Qualitative have basic in the realistic. Almost all qualitative research workers influence, explain or construe some different signifier. The qualitative researches are used explicating and existent observations with the purpose of developing a theory. Harmonizing to Isadore and Carolyn, ( 1988 ) this theory will construe what were experienced. Besides Veal ‘s sentiments, the methods used to roll up information are observation, formal, informal, part icipant observation and in-depth interviewing.5.2 Quantitative researchQuantitative research is the positive doctrines. Most of quantitative research attacks use to stress what are a existent common and what everybody can hold, despite they have theoretical differences. The quantitative research attacks are used when get down a theory or get down a hypothesis. This manner checks to corroborate or disconfirm to turn out that hypothesis is right or wrong ( Isadore and Carolyn, 1988 ) . Harmonizing to Veal ( 2005 ) the information collect studies, from questionnaire-based, and from secondary beginnings.5.3 Proposed Research MethodsIn this survey usage deductive and quantitative applies. There are two package will be used, those are SPSS ( Statistical Package for societal Science ) and Excel. SPSS and Excel will be used to analysis the informations after roll uping respondents and the study questionnaires.6 Collection of informations6.1 Secondary informationsHarmonizing to Boyce ( 2002 ) , secondary Data is considered as figures and a fact. Secondary informations already exist and can be available for everybody who wants to utilize them for the single intent of each individual. They may be of import information depend on a peculiar portion or research. Secondary informations provide basic information for illustration when demand to seek information for a undertaking program. Background information will assist clearly the research and easy understand the responsibilities with more clearly and deep. The research workers will hard to place what are cogency and dependability without secondary informations. They are ever cheaper and easier available than primary informations.6.2 Primary informationsEqually far as Kerin ( et al, 2003 ) if research workers need facts and figures are freshly collected, they have to utilize primary informations. All most researches use primary informations which are cod by study, depth interviews and focal point groups. They interview a bi g Numberss of participants and necessitate them reply the questionnaires, that is a simple manner to hold information and make a study. In undertakings require focal point groups or depth interviews but do n't necessitate more people, merely a little of participants but have to carefully selected ( Boyce, 2002 ) . Primary informations are ever more expensive and take longer clip if comparison with secondary informations.6.3 Sample size of Primary DataIn the undertaking assess the sample size is really of import and necessary. Basically, progressively gather every bit much information as possible and they will do the truth in your research higher. The primary informations in this survey will selected from more than 500 study respondents. They are students, parents, instructors and related people who willing joint study. In which over 75 % of study will be answered and fill in the questionnaires by traveling to face-to-face meetings, telephone interviews and other will complete questi onnaire and direct back by electronic mail.7. Method of Data AnalysisAs writer Bryman and Bell ( 2007 ) survey by the information analysis is indispensable. Statistically analyzed informations are required and informations analysis helps to see whether the hypotheses which were created have been supported.8. Presentation of dissertationaˆ?Show this thesis is the procedure of information figures, graphs and tabular arraies. Furthermore, it will be supported by composing, study and readers.9. Ethical IssuesEthical motives issues are to the appropriate of the research ‘s behaviour in relation to the rights of those who become the topic of the research or are affected by it ( Golafshani, 2012 ) . Ethical concerns may be occurred at all phases of undertaking and all undertakings: When seeking entree During informations aggregation As informations are analyzed And when studies are written10. ResourcesAll the resources in this research are collected from: – EASB library – Singapore national library – Wiley Online Library – Internet. – UWIC e-library – Vietnam national library11. Table agendas12. DecisionPrimary instruction is the most of import job and it refers to the most hard occupation is to develop people, preparation of human resources for the future society. As society moves, airss major undertaking for instruction. Vietnam ‘s instruction should be â€Å" sheding † . Three old educational reforms are related to the political convulsion. This clip, Vietnam is pitching up to do the end that is going an industrialised state in 2020 and modern industry in 2050, progressively integrated into the universe. Perform two aims must foremost run into human development ends. A meaningful instruction is geared towards a better hereafter, more civilizable. Leader Ho Chi Minh reminded â€Å" For the interest of 10 old ages to works trees, for the intent of hundred old ages to works people † . The concerns of day-to-day instruction can be found present in all mass media plenty to see how of import issues. Lawyer Nguyen, V.T ( 2006 ) , packaged his all concerns in a sentence â€Å" A bad physician killed a patient, a bad officer, will kill a squad, but a bad instructor will kill a coevals † . Possibly so, the lifelong of people struggle to do money, in add-on to take care their lives, they frequently have the biggest desire that is the following coevals of kids and have more learning chances. Richest planet foreman Bill Gates has done, the less money people to make the same and destitute people besides would wish to make it.

Popular Entertainment, Performing Arts Essay

Popular entertainment is â€Å"ideas, perspectives, altitudes, memes, and other phenomena that are preferred by an informal consensus within the mainstream of a given culture. † Now like me most people would think, â€Å"I still don’t get it. † Popular entertainment is basically a genre of entertainment based on the popularity it has gained. Many people often confuse popular culture which is basically popular entertainment with pop culture. The most important difference between the two is that popular culture is gained popularity regardless of the style whereas pop culture is based on a specific society and historic period which contains qualities of mass appeal. Popular Entertainment is often stereotyped as trivial and one could almost say dumbed down to be accepted by the masses of society, which allows those who aren’t part of the main stream such as religious groups and countercultural groups to heavily criticize it. These groups deem it superficial, consumerist, sensational and even corrupted. The Distinction between Popular and Higher Culture Popular entertainment can be traced back to the 19th century where it was considered education and general culture of the lower class as opposed to the official or dominant class of society. By the end of World War 2 the following big cultural and social changes brought by most media innovations caused Popular Entertainments meaning to overlap with that of mass culture, media culture, image culture and culture for mass consumption. It is believed that there are as many as six different meanings of Popular Entertainment. The quantitive meaning often sets in the confusion of certain â€Å"higher culture† that is also popular. * It is also described as the left over culture after â€Å"higher culture† has been defined and taken from the equation. * It is also said that it is equivalent to mass culture and ideas. Then it is described as commercial culture which is mass produced for mass consumption by mass media from Western Europe which can be compared to American Culture. * It has been known as the authenticate culture of the people * That it has a political dimension to it Personally I think it can be most relevantly described as the struggle between the resistant of lower groups in society and forces of incorporation of the dominant groups of society with regards to the entertainment world. Popular Entertainment or culture can easily be recognized by the distinction between that which is considered popular and that which is considered as high class. It has emerged from urbanisation of industrial revolution. Confusion comes in when Bart Simpsons for example, which is a television animation which can be considered as higher class has elements of popular entertainment in it. Studies of Shakespeare notice that many characteristic vitality of his drama in its participation in Renaissance Popular Culture while contemporary practitioners such as Dario Fo and John McGarth use popular culture in its Gramscian sense that includes ancient folk tradition like comedia dell‘arte. This makes it difficult for the average person to then differentiate between Popular Entertainment and Higher forms of entertainment. Popular entertainment constantly changes and occurs specifically in place and time. It boils down to that which represents a complex of mutually interdependent perspectives and values that influences society and its influences in various ways. Popular Entertainment is therefore commonly more appealing to the broader spectrum of society. Popular Entertainment can therefore be related to that which people can easily relate to. Popular culture is also associated with self-referentiality. This basically means that Popular Entertainment is mainly based on exploring every realm of corrective experience instead of just relying on reality. Many media outputs devote it to other images whereas self-referentiality is all-embracing. It is said that the side effect of mass consumerism reflects a fundamental paradox which is basically the increase in technological and cultural sophistication combined with the increase in superficial and dehumanization. What makes Popular Entertainment Popular? Anyone who enjoys the streets who enjoys feasting his eyes on shop windows piled high with all kinds of everyday wares and artful trifles; anyone who enjoys the cafes is unlikely to be moved by the polished art of the serious theatre. Unless the theatre shouts as lustily as the streets it won’t attract an audience for love or money. The Parisian derives far more enjoyment from the fetes and traveling theatres than from anything the dramatic theatre has to offer- Vsevolod Meyerhold We must give credit to the basic principles of the circus and the music hall. In olden times there was the influence of French comedians and of Chaplin. The first news of fox trot and jazz, this early love thrived. The music hall element was obviously eeded at the time for the emergence of a montage form of thought- Sergei Einstein, tr. Daniel Gerould Playfulness is a volatile sometimes dangerously explosive essence which cultural institutions seek to bottle or contain in the vials of games, of competition, chance, and strength in modes of simulation such as theatre and in control disorientation from roller coasters to dervish dancing- Victor Turner What is Popular Entertainment? Popular Entertainment is basically any form of entertainment that is considered relevant to those who form part of the lower and middle class. It is the entertainment which as gained popularity not for the specific style that is used, but for its relevance. Popular entertainment therefore cannot simply be associated with its level of popularity since there can be other, much higher levels of entertainment that can also be popular. This does not mean that the element of popularity is completely cut from what popular entertainment is, it just means that it is not solely based on the level of popularity but more so on the level of popularity the style of entertainment has gained regardless of it style. Genres in popular entertainment Folklore Folklore is a form Popular Entertainment but is not mass produced. Folklore persists today by word of mouth instead of through mass media, e. g. jokes and urban legends. Folklores element of popular entertainment engages big time with the commercial element. The public has its own tastes and it may not embrace all sorts of entertainment. Popular entertainment has an interconnected nature. Things such as when you sulk and the clock strikes 12:00 that your face would stay like that can be considered as folklore. Many people embrace this form, but instead of being spread in masses it gets carried over from generation to generation by word of mouth. Burlesque Burlesque is often stereotyped with strippers walking on a run way. This is not a complete myth although, burlesque in its essence was a form of popular entertainment that over stepped the boundaries of what was considered â€Å"right† in the time frame. Burlesque generally consists of music and comedy. The main attraction towards burlesque was its sense of making fun of sex. This is one of the main reasons why the female cast members bodies were exposed in sexy tight fitting and short costumes. Burlesque in the period of its peak was very popular mainly because the form of exposure was considered immoral in that time. The woman of that time covered their bodies’ true form with frills and puffs of material while those on the burlesque stage had their garters sticking out with tights and body suits, leaving very little for the imagination. Its sense of humour was solely based on exposed humans’ sexual nature and they relied on comedy with double meanings. It was a very clever way of getting people to laugh as they would make comments like I’m sorry I was late, but my gadget broke. Allowing the audience to wonder what was she late for and what gadget broke. She could mean she was late or she didn’t â€Å"come† in time because her g-string broke. This form of comedy an exposure of the female body made burlesque a leading genre through the 1840s up until the 1960s. Burlesque then introduced other genres such as vaudeville to fill the show, but at the time many vaudeville performers considered burlesque as demoralising but when they times were tough they would perform in burlesque under aliases. The female cast members were soon playing men roles. Burlesque was never really about a strong script but more about the power of the star playing the role to keep audiences stimulated and coming back for more, â€Å"Underdressed woman playing sexual aggressors, combining good looks with impertinent comedy- in a production written and managed by woman? Unthinkable! † Burlesque was basically dominated by daring woman who with enough will power believed that they could accomplish anything. Burlesque evolved into making fun of relevant topics and popular shows along with a sexual connotation which kept audiences intrigued. Burlesque became a variety act that included song, dance, juggling, comics, etc. Burlesque soon took on the format of a minstrel show. It was when males took over the management of Burlesque that female wit was replaced with trying to reveal as much of the female body as possible. Millie Deleon, Burlesques biggest star in the 20th century, threw her garters in the audiences and at times did not wear tights. This got her arrested but also assisted in giving burlesque a bad reputation. A typical burlesque stage setting was based on common places that the middle and lower class audience could relate to as they were the target audience. Common settings were courtrooms, street corners, class rooms, as well as examining rooms. Burlesque comedy focussed a lot of misunderstandings which kept it interesting. Cabaret Cabaret is unique for its venue. Originally the word means a place where alcohol is served. Cabaret in the world of entertainment refers to a performance in an intimate restaurant or nightclub setting where adults can enjoy entertainment that stretches the boundaries of what was permitted in the time of origin. A cabaret can more so be described as intellectuals that gathered in an intimate environment to share ideas by means of comedy, song, dance and theatre. These ideas were mainly based on politics and themes that had social relevance. The first Cabaret â€Å"Cabaret Artistique† opened in 1881 in Paris, France. It was later renamed to â€Å"Le Chat Noir. Its main attraction was not the half dressed woman as in Burlesque but rather the sharing of ideas in the associated venue. Cabarets can be considered as the outcasts or those who went against the norms of society and performed their opinions through skits that they would often come up with in a span of an evening or during the day. Cabarets content is almost always relevant to society of its time frame. The comedy used in cabaret was not just any old jokes or random making fun of whatever was relevant but rather very clever. The comedy they used was satire which is often described as being tickled with a blade. Cabarets relied on using content that was sensitive in society and they would make fun of that only to later make the audience later realise that they were laughing about something that is actually very serious. For example the news may show how babies get raped on a regular basis then cabaret performers would satirically perform these rapes but with the idea that they want people to be aware of the seriousness of the problem. This may seem complicated as they make are making fun of very sensitive things but most cabarets was a very clever way of influencing an audience member’s frame of thought. Cabaret is also unique for its audience interaction. A typical cabaret often involved the audience completely in the performance. In cabaret it is specifically important to keep the audience intrigued by the performance, but also being able to allow them a chance to embrace the intimate space they are in with whoever they are with. Cabarets gave room for the audience to interact with one another. It is vital to know that a cabaret is specifically targeted at the adult audience and is not appropriate for all ages or families. Cabaret is about being able to explore the boundaries that have been set by society in this intimate environment. Cabaret also has variety acts like jugglers, singers, dances, clowns, etc. but it was mainly based on the message that they are trying to bring across. In a cabaret the audience did not have to abide by the laws of society, so the audience was automatically comfortable. The audience did not have to sit in a specific way or take off their hats when they came to the cabaret instead they were free to be, socialise as they pleased and also enjoy the entertainment of a cabaret. Later cabaret gained a jazz element to it but its main focus has barely changed besides the misconceptions modern society has. Vaudeville This is basically any form of inoffensive entertainment which solely relied on the audience response. Vaudeville could include anything from juggling, freak acts to dumb acts. It focuses on entertaining, fascinating and reaching the unthinkable. Anyone could enjoy a vaudeville act and while it often included song and dance the core of a vaudeville act was doing something extraordinarily. The audience is very interactive in this style of entertainment and an audience response could either make or break an act. For a vaudevillian it is vital to always be at their best as a slip up in one act could ruin their reputation for good. Vaudevilles format was never about the importance of the act but rather based on the order of appearance. Vaudeville affected the normal comedy world as vaudeville was fun, entertaining and often humorous. It was only later that comics were emerged into vaudeville by means of a master of ceremonies which also assisted in making certain bills hit shows instead of just normal. It is vital to realise that vaudeville bills weren’t always entertaining. Some were really boring and others just average, vaudeville relies on the fact that it consists of 8acts and if an audience does not like a particular act they had the next act to rely on, to fulfil the audience taste. Comparisons and contrasts The one thing almost all the genres within popular entertainment have in common is that their target audience are all the lower class or working class of its time. The difference is evident where it’s a given that Burlesque is more specifically targeted at male audience, while cabaret is targeted at adults who don’t always agree with government and vaudeville is targeted at everyone. Burlesque and cabaret can compare in the sense that they both are more appropriate at night but while burlesque relies on its sexual connotation and exposed females, cabaret relies on the relevance of the topics that they use and the ideas they share. Vaudeville is basically any type of entertainment within the parameters of society while burlesque and cabaret is more anti-society than anything else. It is evident that dominant classes of the time of each of these genres basically looked down on all the styles mentioned, but this is what kept the middle and lower classes entertained. In each style, song, dance and comedy is relevant but while vaudeville relied on slapstick and amusing comedy cabaret relies of clever, satirical and black humour and burlesque makes use of confusing or misinterpreting or even witty comedy. Wit and satire can be very closely associated but satires method to tickle with a blade makes it unique to cabaret. While vaudeville could be showed in a theatre or even a park and burlesque can be showed in any theatre or circuit it is vital that the cabaret has the intimate bar or restaurant vibe attached to it. While vaudeville can be identified for its entertainment and fascinations, burlesque can be identified for its guts while cabaret can be identified by the roughness and the â€Å"balls† in its skits. Cabaret and Burlesque is very closely associated while they both may contain vaudeville acts it is strictly prohibited to have any sort of burlesque or cabaret acts or skits in vaudeville as it is not sociably accepted. Many vaudevillians considered Burlesque as demoralising and if any vaudevillian act offends an audience member they could be dismissed. Cabaret almost everything is allowed the cast could cleverly insult an audience member often cabarets are successful for the odd uncomfortable feeling that the audience may feel during skits or a scene. The historical developments of Popular Entertainment Ancient Greek history Popular entertainment in its essence can be traced as far back as the 5th century BC. This is linked by the ancient Greeks who added song and dance in their comedies and tragedies. Athenian playwrights also had songs in their plays which were sometimes self-composed. These plays were staged in open air amphitheatres which included sexual humour, political and social satire, jugglers and everything else that might entertain the majority. The songs were often a way to allow the chorus to comment on the action on stage. It is evident that ancient musicals had no direct on modern musicals or popular culture. It does prove that the concept has been present for approximately 25 hundred years.
